KaneTrax: June 2021

Summer Fridays are back in action. Enjoy the latest KaneTrax this weekend – or anytime!

  1. DrownGenesis Owusu
    • I can’t say quite enough about the debut album of Genesis Owusu, but it’s been getting heavy spins around KaneTrax HQ this month. Lots to choose from and lots to enjoy form the Ghanaian-Australian singer. It’s a lot of hip hop, funk, R&B, but truly a genre-bender.
  2. Hall of DeathMatt Sweeney & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy
    • Superwolves is a collab between Matt Sweeney and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, more than 15 years after the two first released Superwolf. These musicians complement eachother so well, and the deep exploration of musical styles is outstanding on the album.
  3. New California BlueJohn Andrews & The Yawns
    • While the album ‘Cookbook’ doesn’t come with any recipes, it’s an opportunity for John Andrews to showcase his skills as a bandleader. This is the Woods keyboardist’s third release with the Yawns, and New California Blue is a simply wonderful example of their free-flying yet gentle folksy sound.
  4. NightflyerAllison Russell
    • If you’re paying attention, you probably have heard Nightflyer of Allison Russel’s solo debut Outside Child. The song has radio play for good reason – the tune showcases her incredible lyrics, beautiful voice and is deeply personal.
  5. Blues Inside MeMatt Berry
    • Things immediately shift gears here to the trippy sounds of Matt Berry. Berry replicates a vintage 60’s psychedelic sound as he impressively plays every instrument on the album, outside of the drums. The layering of synthesizers thought Blues Inside Me creates a really enjoyable number.
  6. For The CultureSons of Kemet
    • We continue to get trippier with the works of Sons of Kemet, the British acid jazz aficionados. Their worldly sound creates a straight up danceable delight, you can’t help but want to get up and move to this groove!
  7. Blue FunkBlanketman
    • Another British band coming up next, this time with a punk-rock, indie-pop sound. National Trust is their first release – just an EP – leaving me wanting more. This group was just getting going before the pandemic, and I hope they are able to tour across the pond soon.
  8. Blackberry EstThe Peacers
    • Blexxed Rec came out earlier this year, and I was drawn to the album as it was just so ‘listenable” top to bottom. The album is grungy yet features strong undertones of classic folk and rock influence. Give it a spin.
  9. Days in the SunLanue
    • Singer-songwriter Sarah Krueger has been making music for more than 10 years under different names and projects, but Lanue, her latest project, just might be the one to stick. She hails from the town of Duluth in northern Minnesota, and her soft, soulful sound simply radiates on Days in the Sun.
