This month’s mix starts off with something of a funky tropical number from Amo Amo with their debut Closer to You. It’s a fun, vibey song, and the soothing guitar makes for a great backdrop for the idyllic vocals.
Next up is a funked out tune from Maribou State called Feel Good, which features samples from Khruangbin. It’s a grooving mashup that takes the chill factor from Khruagbin and turns it up a notch. I’m certainly feeling good about turning up for this one.
Shifting gears to a bit of a gospel sound, is The War and Treaty. The husband and wife duo have been building a following for years with their rootsy sound and big voices. It’s Not Over Yet is a powerful song and a great showcase of their talents.
It’s not often you hear a harp in modern music, but after casting aside any skepticism, it’s clear that Mikaela Davis flat out crushes. Her beautiful voice are a perfect complement to her mastery of a seemingly bygone instrument. Other Lover is a catchy tune that’s been on repeat lately.
When she’s not on tour with husband Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires has a great voice of her own and recently released her sixth solo album. Her influences are clearly in country and Americana but White Feather is a tune everyone can enjoy.
You might recognize Lola Kirke as the star of Mozart in the Jungle, but she is a musician in real life too! Her debut album is great, and Point of No Return is a great example of the kinds of delicate, soothing ballads she creates. Way to go Hayley!
Shifting gears a bit to a very stripped down R&B sound, is Blood Orange with Charcoal Baby. The riffing guitar and simple drum beat create a great foundation for the tune, which beautifully layers on vocals and various synthesizers for great all around musical production.
Israel Nash is a guitarist and songwriter with a decidedly vintage sound. Northwest Stars (Out of Tacoma) is one of those driving rock songs that has the feel of an anthem with it’s slow building to a big crescendo. The chorus is catchy and the vocal harmonies are top notch.
Speaking of catchy, Mitski rounds out the playlist this month with Nobody, a sad tune with an uplifting energy. The mood of the song bounces around from cocktail lounge-esque to straight disco/funk/pop goodness. If the question is who is listening to this tune, you can count me as “somebody”.
