July 2018

It’s still July, right? Then enjoy these tunes!

Being a lifelong Beatles fan, it would be hard for me not to recognize Paul McCartney‘s latest offering, but this is more than a courtesy nod. Sir Paul shows he can still be creative with new songs; I Didn’t Know is a well written ballad that grabs me both for it’s lyrical complexity and musical brilliance. What an exciting thing to have a 76-year-old music legend who’s still got it!

This month’s 1960’s psychedelic/vibey/poppy, feel-good throw-back tune comes from The Blank Tapes. Matt Adams, as he’s know legally, has a boat-load of music to his credit, so after discovering Paradise, I’m excited to discover more of the back catalog.

Benjamin Schoos is a singer/songrwiter/producer from Belgium. I stumbled upon All Night Every Night and was captivated by the soothing, melancholy-inducing melodies. And since I can’t resist a good opportunity for a pun, this is definitely a song I could listen to all night every night.

There seems to be a resurgence of country-rooted music in the mainstream these days, led by the likes of Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton and Lukas Nelson and you might as well add Brent Cobb to that list. Ain’t A Road Too Long is a bit of a ripper from his latest album but the entire LP is worth your listen.

The Talking Heads catalog is at the top of my all time favorites, and I’ve spent years getting to know their catalog, so when Angelique Kidgo re-imagined many of these songs for release this summer, I was stoked. Her fusion of afro-beat with the classic Once in a Lifetime is simply fantastic.

Parker Millsap fits the image of one of the “good ole’ boys” of Americana, and has garnered quite a bit of attention the past couple years with his unique blend of traditional rock, blues, country and folk. Tell Me is one of the grittier tracks on his latest album, but shows off his vocal talents and the raw emotion in his music.

Another band who simply nails the classic 1970’s retro-rock, it’s The Nude Party. You could very easily tell me this album was unearthed from 1976 based on vibe alone, and if I had a Chevrolet Van, I’d probably hop in and follow these guys on tour. Their entire debut album spent a couple weeks on repeat for me – surely you’ll enjoy.

After a handful of lineup (and life) changes, the Dirty Projectors released a dark and emotional album last year. The 2018 follow up seems to have a sense of renewed purpose and more upbeat direction.  You might just say that it’s quite a Break-Thru (sorry, i can’t help myself when it comes to a good pun).

KaneTrax is typically a showcase of brand new tunes, but went a slightly different direction with Whatever Turns You On, and hey, it’s my playlist, so whatever turns me on, and I was recently reminded of how much I dig Daniel Norgren‘s homegrown, eclectic style. So hopefully this one turns you on!
