Summer’s here and it’s time for some fresh tunes!!
Listen to the entire playlist HERE or below:
Leading off this month is the title track from Charlie Cunningham‘s Minimum. If you couldn’t tell by the title, it’s a very stripped down tune, but a very enjoyable one from the London-based singer/songwriter’s debut album.
Based on the song’s lyric “back to the hole that I came from”, Casanova could be a sort of omage to darker times in the singer’s background, but if the first single is any indication of how Rayland Baxter‘s upcoming album will sound, I hope he stays out of the hole.
The Middle Kids have been around for a couple of years, but released their debut full-length album this year, and it’s a solid listen straight through. The Australian trio really hits all of the indie-rock-anthem buttons with Mistake and it would not be a mistake to give them a listen..
Holy Wave is a psych rock outfit from Texas that has quietly been releasing music for a number of years. Adult Fear came out earlier this year, and The Nurse’s Tale showcases their soothing, slow-building, style with echoing lyrics and gentle synthesized melodies extremely well.
Call it good fortune, but I randomly stumbled upon Good Luck by Meernaa recently having never heard of the group but it was a pleasant surprise. The tune is heavy and soulful and showcases some impressive vocals that jump from deep and bluesy to nearly a capella.
If there is album that’s been on repeat for me lately more than any other, it’s probably Wide Awake! by Parquet Courts. The title track (Wide Awake) was an obvious choice to showcase here, but check out the entire album to experience the full range of their punk-rock meets new-age meets the dance floor sound.
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks have been making music for close to 20 years at this point and have established themselves as top of their class when it comes to vintage, 90’s alternative rock style. The tune Middle America aptly embodies much of their fan-base and exemplifies their characteristic sound.
After several years of quiet, English singer/songwriter Ben Howard must have felt a huge sense of accomplishment, so it’s ironic that my favorite song from Noonday Dream is titled The Defeat. The tune has a dark undertone but the soothing lyrics sit nicely atop the various synth effects for a very nice overall composition.
I had a difficult time picking New Beliefs as my favorite tune from River Whyless‘ latest album, because there were too many good songs to chose from. This fun, easy-going tune is easy to get stuck in your head, and will certainly be on repeat for me as we roll into Summer.
Catch you next month!
